Overview

The case study details the UX/UI procedures used in creating an intuitive mobile application. It is a media streaming smartphone app that allows you to watch movies and TV episodes online with your loved ones, even while you are in separate locations. This app offers the ability to phone or do real-time face-to-face face-time while watching movies. You can select a movie, TV show, or animation from a variety of genres and categories.

Background🤞

People are housed in quarantine during the corona pandemic. They lack a means of socialising with their friends. Therefore, this app offers a fantastic option for groups to view movies in virtual reality. This can assist people pass the time and allow them to select from a wide range of different movie and web series genres, depending on how they are feeling. Every person in the world enjoys viewing movies with their loved ones, whether they do so online or off.

Hanging out with friends and coworkers is what individuals miss most during the pandemic. Why not provide all of those individuals the chance to watch movies online while having a live conversation with their loved ones via the same app? ‍

Problem Statement🤞

People are housed in quarantine during the corona pandemic. With their buddies, they are unable to have fun. The most common thing people miss is socialising with friends and coworkers. Thus, the desire for a central platform where they may watch shows while yet feeling emotionally linked to one another arises.

Branding 🤩

Font used in logo: Century Gothic. Primary colours are red and blue.

Logo Logic 🙂

The brand logo has been made from the words Cinema/Play, friends (mates), and the starting letter ‘C’, which combines together to form Cinemates.

Design Process

I started with primary and secondary research before creating user journeys to comprehend the issues, annoyances, objectives, and requirements of regular users. I made the decision to conduct in-person interviews and web research to better understand the demands of users. A final solution was put into practise once pain sites were identified.

User Research and Survey 📝

  • Users use Amazon prime, Netflix, Hotstar and Youtube, Alt Balaji, Zee5.

  • Most of the people like to watch movies in dark.

  • 52% users like to watch online movies and 48% watches offline movies.

  • People like to watch movies alone as well as with their family and friends.

What our users had to say:

Secondary Research 📈

Analysis Matrix of popular media streaming apps

Problem Objective 🎯

A platform that allows users to stream movies of their choice from anywhere in the world, giving them a sense of the theatre and the real world without having to leave their home. People should be able to communicate with one other using the app.

👉 Analyzing the Problem: For whom? 🎬

  • Friends who like to watch movies together.

  • Most of them likes to watch movies online, but couldn’t find a perfect platform where they could get the real offline vibes with friends.

  • Most people like watching movies in the dark, the app should cause less strain to the eyes.

  • People who want to spend quality time with their circle.

  • People watch movies together so they can socialize and exchange comments and reactions

User Persona 👩

User Journey 🛣️

Building a better product required understanding and assessing the user experience, therefore I set out to map this user flow using the information I discovered during the interviews. The difficulties of using several apps at once are concealed by this flow, which appears to be very straightforward.

This map covers the entirety of the user’s process, his feelings and expectations. This process was useful in highlighting which parts of the journey were positive for the user, and which ones were in need of improvements.

👉 These insights led me to formulate some key questions:

How might we…

  • create a watch party remotely with friends and family that feels like a real movie experience?

  • allow people to interact and stay emotionally connected while watching a movie?

  • create a universal platform that can allow friends and strangers to join?

  • keep the UI simple, without adding a lot of details, since this feature is new to users?

👉 Design Solution: Challenges to Success! 🏆

After researching and synthesizing the problems, goals, and features, we started on ideating our design.

  • Real time interaction with friends without switching into other apps or pausing.

  • Movies / series categorized into genres and languages.

  • To collab with media-streaming apps/have movies within itself to avoid copyright issues.

  • To have a checklist of ratings of the movies to choose from.

  • Shows the percentage of people who liked the particular movie.

  • Dark mode for less strain to the eyes.

User Flow ↩️

The purpose of the user flow is to guide us when designing the wireframes about how the application works. The app has been designed in an easy way for any user.

Sketching and Wireframing ✍️

After the finalization of the many sketches, I was able to iterate the low-fidelity wireframes. Then, finalized on the visual direction.‍

Visual Design and Prototyping 🎨

Future Steps

  • Include a user on-boarding process for new users to understand the features

  • Website

  • Conduct more usability test to get more insights on our new watch party feature

  • In-built chat option (to find out after testing)

  • Schedule movies for a later date and time by integrating it with calendar

Learnings

  • I became aware of the value of research in identifying the appropriate market and audience.

  • I realized that people have a wide range of ideas, therefore identifying the best issue to address requires investigation.

  •  I worked on my first app design project on this one, and I made a lot of mistakes and learned from them.

  • Most importantly, I discovered that there is always space for design improvement.

Impact 🔥

People need to get used to the new and safe internet means because the Covid-19 pandemic crisis will last for a very long time. Our research led us to the conclusion that users yearn for social interactions. Being physically united is not always safe or possible in this increasingly fractured world. Remote movie viewing with pals is a secure and convenient option. Both the consumer and the service provider will benefit financially by using this application, "Cinemates." This would provide the user with all the capabilities in a single click and assist individuals in adapting to the new reality of the situation.✌️
